This was our fourth trip to Malaysia and visiting Penang had become our top priority. Having previously spent all our time in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi we seriously regret not travelling to Penang sooner.  What is it about Malaysia’s second largest city that has us wanting to return, even though we haven’t left yet? The world-class street-food, pre-WWII architecture, UNESCO world heritage site status and inspired street-art might have something to do with it. After all, George Town is touted by Forbes to be one of the ’18 best budget travel destinations for 2019’.

To give George Town our best go we decided to spend at least 1-week here to see what it really has to offer. Our first 3-nights were spent at the budget-friendly, but highly commendable Travelodge George Town, Penang Hotel. Read on to find out what we loved about the hotel and why it’s a great place to stay in George Town.

Travelodge George Town

Our Travelodge experience started after the 25-minute journey from the airport. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were quickly greeted by the front of house staff.

The check-in process was easy and the staff guided us clearly through the process. We were quickly checked-in and ready to head to the room, but not before a complimentary welcome drink was offered. The fresh, lemon-based, drink was a nice touch.

The Lobby

The hotel has a large, quirky lobby that has several tables and chairs for you to make use of. There is the main desk which has the hotel staff readily waiting to take any of your questions or requests. Besides this, there is a bar, snacks and ice-cream available throughout the day. Also, be sure to check out the tour desk which has much information about the city’s best attractions. Should you have any further questions, the friendly staff, are always willing to help you out. Whether you need help booking an attraction, directions or local tips, the front of house staff are there to help.

The Bedroom

During our 3-night stay at the Travelodge hotel, we were in one of their ‘Superior’ rooms. At approximately 19 to 25 square meters, the room was very well sized. There is enough room to unpack your bags and move around without ever feeling cramped or short of space. We also quickly noticed that the room was exceptionally clean and very well maintained. The large window not only lets in a lot of natural light but also gives great views across Penang. From our window, we could see Penang hill and some of the famous architecture that George Town is known for.

The large bed takes centre stage in the room but it’s not the only nice feature. Each room comes with a flat-screen TV with satellite channels should you wish to unwind after a long day. There is a desk and a WIFI connection, which makes your room the perfect place to get some work done. The air-conditioning unit makes it easy to have the room at your preferred temperature for a better nights sleep. Also included are tea/coffee making facilities, a minifridge and electronic safe to keep your belongings secure.

Quality of Sleep

The beds that you’ll find in Travelodge hotels are worthy of their own section. Their dream-quality beds give you the perfect base for a quality sleep. We found the mattresses to be extremely comfy and not swaying too far to either the ‘too soft’ or ‘too firm’ side. It’s also worth noting that you have the option of changing pillows. We were provided with soft pillows as standard. Though a quick call can have yours replaced with a firmer pillow should that be your preference.

The bathroom

The bathroom, like the room, is of a very good size and notably clean. You’ll never have the problem of feeling cramped or struggling to move around. The shower is amazing, in the sense that it was powerful and easy to control the temperature to your liking. Towels and toiletries (shampoo and shower gel) were provided. There was also a toothbrush, toothpaste, showercap, razor, hand gel and hair dryer to make use of during our stay. If you run out of anything, daily housekeeping, or a quick call to the office will have your bathroom restocked.

Hotel Facilities

The hotel might appeal to price-conscious travellers but don’t let this fool you into thinking there aren’t great facilities. These facilities are another way that Travelodge cements their company ethos of affordable quality. Travelodge George Town has a café, bar, pool, gym and events room. You can read about each of them below.

Zest Café

The Zest café is the hotel’s main eatery. This is where you’ll be able to enjoy the breakfast buffet or grab a snack later in the afternoon. The long, spacious café has many seats and makes sure that you’ll never have to wait for a table. There are also a number of seats located outside, near the pool, to provide the opportunity for open-air dining.

Breakfast is served between 7am-11am and has both western and local offerings. You can expect foods such as croissants, cereals, local favourite Nasi Lemak and fresh fruits. There really is a good variety with flavours to match many taste buds. The coffee, made with fresh coffee beans is a very nice way to gain a boost in the morning. Besides the coffee, you’ll also find tea, water and fruit juices.

Zest café remains open for the rest of the day and provides an a-la-carte style dining service. You can go in to grab a bite to eat or simply enjoy a coffee.

Note: All rooms include free breakfast

Zest Bar

Zest bar is located right next to but separate from Zest café. The bar sits beside the pool and serves a variety of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There are daily drink deals and happy hours for you to take advantage of. With its great location, you can enjoy an afternoon poolside with a cold drink and the occasional dip in the water.

The pool

Nice pools and budget-friendly hotels don’t usually go hand in hand. The Travelodge George Town hotel rips up the rule book in this regard. The hotel has a nice sized pool that we found to be clean, well maintained and exceptionally warm. The pool area gets a great amount of sunlight from around mid-day until sunset. It’s the perfect place to spend your afternoon, having a swim and soaking up some sun rays.

Fitness Centre

Another great feature of the hotel is its fitness facilities. Located on the 1st floor in the same area as the pool you will find the compact but well-equipped gym. The elliptical trainer and treadmill provide all you need to get in a good workout.  This is a great facility for those who are looking to keep fit on the road.

Events space

If you’re in town for a business meeting or event then Travelodge George Town has you covered. There is a multipurpose events space located within the hotel that can be booked for private functions. Whether this is an important business meeting or other function, this facility is a great option for hosting your guests.

Location

Travelodge George Town Hotel is located on the bustling Jalan Macalister. The road runs right through George Town and is one of the city’s main roads. The hotel is easy to locate and is perfectly positioned, providing great access to the rest of the city.

Getting around

Being situated on one of the cities main transport routes makes getting around a breeze. There are a number of transport options available that will help you to maximise your time in the city.

Buses – The are buses that run right up Jalan Macalister and around the city. If this bus line doesn’t go where you need it to, there are other lines located a short walk away. One thing is for certain, if you do take the bus, you’re well connected to the rest of the city. We didn’t make use of this option, though we’re sure the hotel staff would help you in the right direction.

Taxis – There are always taxis available within the area, seemingly at all times of the day. The hotel is easy to locate for taxi drivers and this is a great way to get out an explore. We recommend using GrabTaxi where you can visit the majority of the cities attractions for between 5-10 MYR.

Walking – Believe it or not, Travelodge George Town is within walking distance of some of the cities top things to do. We like walking and this was our preferred mode of transport. Within 15 minutes you can be in the centre of Georgetown viewing the famous street art. Along the way, you’ll pass by countless buildings that display the unique architecture that George Town is famed for.

Nearby Eateries

If you’re somebody who loves your hotel to be well situated in relation to great eateries then you’re in luck. You’d have a hard time resisting the great food offerings located within a few minutes walk of the Travelodge lobby. There are a number of nearby restaurants, local ‘food kers’ (food centres) and many convenience stores. You’ll find all the locations listed below within a 5-minute radius of the Travelodge:

  • Pinang Delicious Food Court
  • Yummy Cottage
  • Sih Jing San Food Center
  • Mamasak Food Ker (highly recommended)
  • Nasi Kandar Pelita

Nearby attractions

In relation to George Town’s top attractions, the hotel is extremely well placed. You can, like us, walk to the centre of George Town in approximately 15 minutes. Should you wish to take the air-conditioned Grab Taxis, you can make the same journey for between 5-10RM. The short walk or taxi will give you access to the following:

Our final word on the Travelodge George Town hotel is nothing but positive. We’d recommend this hotel to those who are looking to stay in George Town and get the most for their money.
